CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Coast Guard rescued four people from a grounded 35-foot boat on the north Port Aransas jetty, Wednesday evening.
A watchstander at Coast Guard Station Port Aransas received a telephone call from the owner of the Ciao Bella at 6:33 p.m., reporting his boat was aground on the north jetty.

Station Port Aransas dispatched a 25-foot Response Boat-Medium to assist the boaters. The RB-M arrived at 6:43 p.m. to find all four people in the disabled boat wearing life jackets. The boat crew transferred the survivors to the RB-M and transported them to Station Port Aransas.

Blasting & Casting

On Wednesday morning the wind was dead calm allowing two-groups of anglers to catch trout limits over shell. Wade fishing with live shrimp was requested. After the duck hunting groups returned, three boats hit the water for a late afternoon session. Fishing was very slow for them. They chunked soft plastics most of the afternoon only to catch a handful of fish. Inland duck hunting offered full-limits of gadwalls, pintails and widgeon. Marsh hunting also gave up full-limits with solid flights of redheads, pintails, teal, bluebills, and widgeon. As of late, taking the hunt to the birds has been the best method of hunting.

Morning Cook Staff, Cook, Guides and Housekeeping “Thank You”

I want to thank the morning staff for their dedicated service. Melissa and Lori arrive each morning at 3:00 AM to cook a hot breakfast. When each guests walks into the great room, they are greeted with a warm smile and friendly voice. Our hunters come up for breakfast at 4:00 AM, and the fishing groups arrive for breakfast at 6:00 AM. Sherman our grill master and evening cook wear’s a jolly smile and greets each customer with a warm handshake and salt of the earth personality. If you shoot ducks, and are staying the evening, let Sherman prepare your duck “you shot”- wrapped duck appetizers with bacon, jalapeno’s topped with jalapeno kiwi jelly. What a great way to relax around the outdoor kitchen before dinner. Sunny, Mary, and Denise who all lived in Seadrift most of their life do an incredible job at housekeeping. After you return from a full day on the water, you will find clean towels, bedding; your room will look clean like the day you arrived. Our guides are the backbone of our business. We wake up each morning during duck season at 3:00 AM, because we’re getting to experience what we love to do. Captain’s Harold, TJ, Jason, Nathan, Rick, Cooper, David, Scott, and Alan- “Thank You”

I had Bill & Fay Stevenson from Gretna down again today. Bill's brother Doug Stevenson is in town from New Jersey and joined us also. Our first stop at the honey-hole was slow, as the trout threw us a curve ball. We only boxed 9 fish in the first 30 minutes of fishing, plan B was put into effect!! Our second stop had another 20-30 trout and 1 flounder hit the ice before slowing down so plan C was next. We found another 10 trout and a school of reds stacked up. We boxed 8 reds in less than ten minutes with a few more trout mixed in, then put another 4 reds on ice all while on anchor. We made one more stop in the lake fishing birds adding a few more trout topping the box off. No limits today but still a full box of fish, great weather, and great company. All fish caught on tand-em rigged chubs, tsunami swim baits, and gold spoons. Never a need for live bait down in dularge. Thanks to my crew for another incredible day on the water.

Hauling Water

We had a fishing meltdown on Saturday with a falling tide most of the day, previously productive areas went “stone cold” for Castaway Lodge Capt’s Steve Boldt, James Cunningham, Jake Huddleston, Chris Cady, and Doug Russell.

Digging Deep

Mike and his guests were celebrating his 50th birthday here at The Lodge and they are new clients. These guys are gentlemen and there wasn’t a whiner in the bunch even as Mother Nature dealt them a nasty water-haul on Day 1. The results of Day 2 left the ills of Day 1 behind and you couldn’t ask for a better “rags to riches” finish. Steve & Chris were back at it today with a real estate shift in mind. Working shallower environs over grass produced near limits of Redfish & full limits of Black Drum for the effort with the Mike P. group.

I’m so very proud of these guys, every one of them. From our newest guide Capt. Doug Russell, Chris, Steve, Jake, James, all of them hit it out of the park and do so regularly. Capt. Chris Cady, when he was still in high school, worked airboat logistics for us, guides helper, deck hand, brushed blinds, built blinds, you name it. I’ve watched him get married, have kids, I even sponsored his run for the Capt’s license. It is so very rewarding to see these guys doing what they do best. Seamless teamwork and selfless dedication to the trade come naturally around here.

Inland Ducks & Geese

Jake’s mastery of inland hunting in the Seadrift area took guests from as far away as Alaska to full limits Friday-Sunday with solid straps of primarily puddle ducks including Widgeon, Gadwall, Teal, and Pintail. I can’t forget to mention a few divers including Canvasback limits with a few “luck lucks”, Specklebelly geese for good measure. Phil, Chris and guest had never killed a “Can” before and it was a “Crimson Tide” over the blocks Sunday.

Saltwater Tears

Capt. James Cunningham tackled a difficult airboat logistics schedule with the Frank M. party over a hectic weekend riding our bay environs to as near limits as you can get without “limiting out” on ducks. Pintail, Redheads, Widgeon, Gadwall & Greenwing Teal dominated our saltwater marsh straps over the weekend.

Castaway Lodge Forecast

We’ve got a cold front coming tomorrow and that should help knock water levels down a bit. I must say we are “anxiously awaiting” some brisk weather. Castaway Lodge forecast calls for heavy Straps & Stringers. We wish you the very best and safest adventures in the outdoors. Special thanks to all of our guests that make this a very special place.
Day 2 with Billy Myers, Danny Myers, and Joe Phillips was better than yesterday. Incredible action today as #100 hit the icechest at 7:20 am. One stop is all it took, as the trout were boiling the water and busting shrimp like crazy. They could not resist our tantem rigged chubs as we had them coming in the boat every-cast. We left the trout biting and went hit the reds. Our red action was much better today as we hooked up with over 16 reds, iceing down 8. What a incredible 2 days these guys had catching close to 300 fish. Great memories made and lots of laughing and joking. Thanks again guys for 2 great days and I look forward to your return.

Day 1 with Billy Myers, Danny Myers, and Joe Phillips from Texas was good as it gets. We had a little late start but it did not matter as the fish were stacked/hungry and waiting for us!! Our first stop had the trout coming in from every direction as the trout were busting up the shrimp big time. We iced down over 60 fish before having to pick up the power-pole. Made a quick move finding 35 more fish to hit the ice before shuting down on us. One more stop and we had #100 iced for 8:00 am. We played catch and release till 8:30 then went in search of redfish. Our redfish bite was slow as we only hooked up with 5 reds. Awesome day on the water with my crew and looking forward to day 2 tomorrow.

NEW ORLEANS — Coast Guard units from Louisiana to Florida are preparing to ensure search and rescue, environmental response, and recovery of the ports and waterways missions are met as Hurricane Ida approaches. Personnel, aircraft and vessels needed to conduct day-to-day operations as well as to respond to Ida have been moved out of the strike zone to ensure continuity of service and to ensure that personnel and equipment are ready to be brought back into affected areas quickly.
Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Teams Venice and Dulac, La., have been evacuated in preparation for the storm, as well as Coast Guard Station Grand Isle, La. No evacuations of Coast Guard units have been ordered in the Mobile, Ala., region at this time.

Coast Guard Captains of the Port for New Orleans and Mobile, Ala., have set Port Conditions Whiskey and X-Ray for their respective areas of responsibility. Port ConditionWhiskey is a heightened condition of readiness and is established when gale force winds are expected in 72 hours, while Condition X-Ray represents a hurricane “watch” condition of readiness and is established when gale force winds are predicted within 48 hours. These conditions are established to provide the maritime community time to make preparations in order to minimize damage from heavy weather. Additional port conditions include Yankee, when gale force winds are predicted to arrive within 24 hours; and Zulu at 12 hours. Captains of the Port may accelerate of delay setting these conditions as appropriate.

In New Orleans, the Port of Plaquemines and the Port of St. Bernard are under Port Condition Whiskey. Port Condition Whiskey requirements are outlined in the Sector New Orleans Maritime Hurricane Contigency Port Plan and can be found at http://homeport.uscg.mil/nola.

In Mobile, Ala., all waterways from mile marker 40 to 432 of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway to include the ports of Gulfport, Miss.; Pascagoula, Miss.; Mobile, Ala.; Pensacola, Fla.; and Panama City, Fla. are under Port Condition X-Ray and must take appropriate actions in preperation of Ida. More information and specific guidelines can be found at http://homeport.uscg.mil/mobile.

The Coast Guard has also outlined a plan with other federal, state and local government agencies and industry partners for post storm waterways surveys to expedite the safe re-opening of critical waterways, if necessary.

The Coast Guard reminds the public to keep a close watch on the storm as it approaches, pay attention to safety announcements from the government, and to listen to any evacuation notices that are given. In an effort to ensure mariners of different nationalities are properly notified of impending severe weather, Coast Guard units have been broadcasting weather notices in three languages: English, Spanish and Vietnamese.

The maritime community and boating public are strongly urged to track the storm’s progress and take early action to protect themselves and their vessels. Extremely high seas, heavy rains and damaging winds that accompany tropical storms and hurricanes present serious dangers to mariners.

Rescue and assistance by the Coast Guard and other agencies may be limited or unavailable immediately before, during and after a devastating storm.

Dangerous weather conditions generated by a tropical storm can cover an area hundreds of miles wide. Even those recreational boaters and the maritime industry that fall outside of the direct path of the storm are advised to be aware of dangerous weather conditions and take appropriate precaustions to stay safe and minimize damage.

Here are a few tips to help mariners protect themselves, their families and their vessels:

■Do not go out to sea in a recreational boat if you know a tropical storm is approaching.
■Contact local marinas to ask for advice about securing your vessel. Marina operators are knowledgeable and can advise you on the best methods for securing your boat.
■Take action now. The effects of a tropical storm can be felt well in advance of the storm itself and can prevent the safe completion of preparations.
■Check with local authorities before entering any storm-damaged area. Do not rush to your boat. Boaters whould not place themselves in danger to get to a boat.
■Do not try to reach your boat if it has been forced into the water and is surrounded by debris. Wait until authorities have made safe access available. Do not try to board a partially sunken boat; seek salvage assistance from a professional.
Storms move quickly and are unpredictable. You can always replace a boat; you cannot replace a life.

What a incredible morning Al Reaux, Troy Reaux, 12 yr olds Josh Champagne, and Ben Breaux experienced this morning. We started the morning off fooling with some birds and only caught about ten fish. Decided it was time to check out some reefs and all it took was one stop. We had the fish coming in every-cast from all directions, nice 16-18 inch fish 1-2 at a time on tandem rigged chubs as usual. After boxing 100 fish by 9am, the winds had picked up and the bite shut down. One more stop in a protected bayou and we had our last 25 trout and 1 really nice flounder. The trout in the bayous are feeding in a winter like bite (swim baits dead slow on the bottom). Josh and Ben did a awesome job today, as these boys are some trout catching pros. The boys put a real hurting on the fish today!!!! Big thanks to Al for another awesome trout slam. Looking forward to fishing with you in Dec.

Bruce Robinson, Tom Birkett, Bob Salerno From Texas joined me this morning. Our morning started off slow catching only 16 trout and 1 red. Made a move to another area and found productive birds feeding on shrimp. The guys started filling up the box slinging in the trout on none other than tan-dem rigged bayou chubs. After boxing right at 60 fish the winds picked up and the bite shut down. Another great day fishing!! Thanks to my crew and Capt Bill Lake for setting up the trip.

Tim Barras and Ricky Tew joined me today for a great trout slam. Our first 3 stops only produced 3 fish, but our 4th stop is where we hit the motherload!! Four nice birds sighted some shrimp skipping across the water running for their lives and the rest is history!! We had the trout coming in the big Skeeter 3-6 at a time on the tantem rigged chubs. LSU and glow/chart is the colors of choice as the trout can't get enough of them. We filled up the box and added 1 redfish all in one spot. After leaving the trout we went in search of redfish. We drifted several usual productive banks with no luck, then called it a day. Thanks Tim for another great day, looking forward to your return in a couple weeks.

Red Tide Off of Texas Coast

BROWNSVILLE — State parks officials on Wednesday were continuing to monitor “red tide” blooms along the state's southern coast, a month after the algae that causes it began killing fish and causing breathing problems.

Willy Cupit, a coastal ecologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Coastal Fisheries, said biologists flying overhead Tuesday saw streaks of red from about 10 miles south of Port Mansfield to Brazos Santiago Pass at South Padre Island.

Aerosol emitted from Karenia brevis, the single-celled organism that causes red tide, was particularly strong Tuesday but had lessened, he said.

“This morning, it looked like it dissipated pretty good,” he said. “It's just unpredictable.”

Don Hockaday of the University of Texas-Pan American Coastal Studies Lab, said water samples showed varying concentrations of the organism.

“It's highly discontinuous,” he said. “From the sky, you can see distinct, clear streaks and clouds. If we take a sample and get 100 (cells per milliliter), we could walk two yards and get a thousand.”

Karenia brevis is always present in the Gulf of Mexico but for unknown reasons tends to bloom in the fall. South Padre had its last major outbreak in October 2006.

Cupit said reports of fish dying in the blooms seemed to have peaked in mid-October.

Beachgoers with asthma or other respiratory conditions can have trouble breathing; others may find themselves coughing, sneezing or experiencing watery eyes.

Winter's cold fronts and cooler water temperatures tend to break up the tides, Cupit said.

HOUSTON, Nov 02, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) - ATP Oil & Gas Corporation (ATPG) announced that on September 30, 2009 it donated its Vermilion 318 "A" platform jacket to the Louisiana Artificial Reef Program (Rigs-to-Reefs) for the creation of a new artificial reef in the Gulf of Mexico in South Marsh Island 133. This new reef structure is located in 204 feet of water to provide feeding and living marine habitat for thousands of underwater species. In addition to the donation of the platform jacket structure, ATP donated $415,200 into the Louisiana Artificial Reef Trust Fund to provide for research, development and management of artificial reefs.

Minerals Management Service's (MMS) diving scientists have observed that invertebrates and plants attach to petroleum platforms within weeks of their initial placement in the marine environment. Within a year, the platform can be completely covered with plants and sessile invertebrates, attracting mobile invertebrates and fish species, and forming a highly complex food chain. The openness of a platform structure allows for water circulation and easy mobility for fish inside the structure where it attracts not only bottom dwelling fish, but also mid- to top-water dwellers.

T. Paul Bulmahn, Chairman and CEO of ATP, said, "The Rigs-to-Reef program benefits both the industry and the environment. The industry saves towing and demolition dollars, and a very real beneficiary is the marine life that utilizes the structures for their new homes. This is the first platform that ATP has donated to the Rigs-to-Reef program. For 2009 ATP has been the Premier Sponsor of the National Wildlife Refuge Photography Contest. This latest donation continues to demonstrate our support for our environment." The Louisiana Artificial Reef Program was established in 1986 to take advantage of retired oil and gas platforms which were recognized as providing marine habitat important to many of Louisiana's coastal fisheries.

Dr Thomas Falterman, Allen Clanton, Donald Kvill, and Ed Tomaszyk joined me today. Donald and Ed are in town from Canada visiting and really enjoyed the fishing and sites "Down in Dularge". Our morning started off with a bang, catching trout every-cast 1-2 at a time on the tandem rigged chubs. The bite shut off as quick as it started after boating right at 30 trout. We moved around boxing another 10 fish on various plastic baits, then went off to target red-fish. Only found 2 reds and a nice big flounder to add to the box. We called it a day around 12:00 as the winds had really picked up, and the guys were looking forward to cleaning and eating some fresh fish. Great time on the water as usual with excellent company. Thanks guys for a great day.
