I use the luminous ones all the time but I have a load of non luminous ones that I have tried a few times but didn't get a hit! Perhaps because they were non luminous or perhaps I was just in the wrong spot at the time.
What are you opinions, lumo or not at night?

I am going on a long range trip aboard the Royal Polaris out of San Diego next month and I want to try jigging. I have an Avet MXL on a med heavy Trevala but want something that can handle bigger fish.

I have a budget of $450 for the reel and around $300 for the rod.I have been doing some recearch on the new OTI G3 rods and I was thinking of going with a 400g but the only thing is I dont like that its only 5'2" whereas the 300g is 6' . I think I like something a little longer like the 300 or even like the 600 which is 5'6".What size should I get, weight and lenght?

As far as reels I am pretty lost because there is so many great light weight braid ready jigging style reels out there.I want a conventional reel and would like suggestions on both star and lever drag reels.

For the star I was thinking Shimano Trinidad 40,Diawa Saltiga,or Penn TQ300.

And as far as levers I was thinking Accurate Boss Mag 665, Avet Hx,Penn 16VSX, and I really love the Alutecnos Gorilla but its a little too much for me.

Any help from all the jigging guys would be great.

Hi all, first post here, this seems like a great source of information for me favorite type of fishing.
I am from Scotland, my wife is Philippine and I now live there.
I HAVE to fish at least 450ft deep because the locals have totally destroyed the reefs (up to 300ft deep) with their illegal dynamiting.
So.. I have a Furuno FCV582L finder with bronze 1k TTH ducer, but at 600ft it is no more than a bottom finder, I mean I cannot see any activity from any fish, I know they are there as I catch them but they don't show on the finder till about 300ft.
When you guys drop to the depths are you finding fish on your finder first? or are you fishing bling like me?

One other thing, most of my fishing is at night, at 600ft does the jig HAVE to be luminous? What are your experiences deep jigging at night?

Thanks for your help and thanks for a great site.

Ian.

Well, I'm psyched to finally be posting up a report about this. For the last year I've made it a goal to catch a jewfish on a spinning reel and a jigging rod. In the spring I hooked up to one but pulled the hook, and I've been thinking about that minute ever since.

Yesterday I got another shot, and while we didn't come across any behemoths...you know, the ones that eat 4' sharks (ask Pepe about that story sometime)...I did get a chance to put a bend in a rod and do battle with some 80ish pounders.

I went out with Pepe (pepescharters.com) and brought along Diego (pescandoenloscayos.net) who wanted to videotape the gringo loco who wanted to target jewfish with a spinner for his spanish tv and internet show.

With a 10 knot northerly breeze we cruised into the gulf about 20 miles and anchored up current of some structure that lit up like a christmas tree when we drove over it. With chum in the water the wait began, and it didn't take long for the first little guy to come calling.

BTW, at this point I should tell you that I was also trying a prototype Synit 550 BFT rod. I figured, if you really want to see what a rod can do, try it out on the angriest, meanest fish you can think of. With stories of jewfish that attack scuba divers in my head, I knew that this would be a great way to pop the cherry.

So back to the little guy. The first fish that couldn't resist was a little one that took the bait and tried to run back to the structure...I think he was a little shocked when he couldn't make any headway- see in the picture, his jaw dropped he's so surprised:D. He was to the surface in probably a minute or two.

Now that the cherry was popped it was time to go after some bigger ones. We slapped a big bait on and the wait began. Again, it didn't take long and I was tight.

A few minutes later and his bigger brother came on up to say hello.

Look at the size of the pec fin- it's as big as my head:eek:

After we released him and got set up again, another one of roughly the same size came calling. A paparazzi moment and he was off to wreak more havoc on the reef.

So, I learned a couple of things on this trip- first, targeting Jewfish on spinners is absolutely do able. Second, the Synit prototype rod is sick and I really need to get it bent on some enormous fish to see what it can do. Third, the gill rakers on these fish are shaaaaaaaarp :D

Diego will be editing the footage and putting it up on Youtube in the coming weeks, and I'm looking forward to seeing how that came out.

The next goal for me will be one of these things, on a spinner, at over 200 pounds...let the games begin:cool:

Shoe

It was a great trip. We started by meeting up at willie joes, had a few drinks and shot the sh**. Everybody was hyped up with anticipation from the great weather. we called it a night and met back up at the dock around 0500 to load up. I was suprised that there wasnt as many rods brought than i expected, lol. The plan was to make the 211 mile/10hr run to the redhawk spar. Here is a pic of the ride out

As soon as we arrived at the spar there was plenty of action on top. A couple of YFT were caught on lures from the start but then became obsolete. Chunks were to be the star of the show. many YFT were starting to hit the deck.
anthony with a nice tuna

After a few hours the tuna started responding to lures. shibuki/brabus minnows became the lure of choice for many anglers. I reluctantly tied one on since i was in denial about the lack of a topwater bite. I soon hook up into a tuna that took everything i had and laughed in my face. the fish literally had me pinned down and wouldnt bugde. There were a few times where i thought my carpenter tn87 was goin to explode but it held up fine.

After about 40min(according to other people) i did the unthinkable and handed my rod off the doug. This was the last thing i wanted it to do but i absolutely had nothing left. the combination of miller lite and bud lite didnt help either. the fish ended up breaking off and swam off with my pride. thanks to steve for the coaching he gave me on this humbling experience.

Doug with his second YFT of the night
