here is a werite up about how to choose their blanks/rods.

Blanks The graphite in our rods is the correct type, grade, modulus or whatever you want call it that suits the intended application of the rod. There is no hype about grades of graphite or fancy marketing names. Higher modulus alone does not make a better rod. There are about 10 different specifications to graphite material along with countless resin systems that have to be considered to pick the material to make the best rod. We carefully study the intended purpose of the rod and then choose the correct materials system that will optimize weight, strength, and achieve the correct action. The overall design of the rod and blank is more important to the performance than just the graphite modulus. Good material, bad design and execution = Ordinary Rod. Right material, good design and execution = Fish Whipping Weapon. There are 5 dimensions to blank design that must be calculated perfectly to create the right blank for the job. 5/D (5 dimension) Blank Design 1. Length 2. Diameter 3. Taper 4. Wall Thickness 5. Material. If you change one, it affects the others. Not one of the 5/D's is more important than the other. Material hype alone can be just that, hype. Sensitivity and power in a rod is determined by rod weight, action and balance, not just material hype. Pick up one of our rods and you will see that we are experts in calculating the 5/D's to make the perfect rod.

Fishery Biology

Finfish and shellfish are a renewable resource. They replenish themselves so they can be harvested within limits and still survive. Animals produce more offspring than survive. In theory if 2 fish produce 2 offspring that live the species will continue to survive. Fish lay thousands to millions of eggs. Very few of these eggs survive to be juvenile Fish. Fewer survive to be adults.

Surplus production

In theory the total weight (biomass) of fish in a habitat will approach the carrying capacity of the habitat (the maximum amount that can live in that area). If there is no fishing the population will be dominated by older larger fish. They prevent the survival of many of the younger fish. When fishing begins older fish are removed from the population and smaller fish survive because the biomass is below the carrying capacity. The fished population becomes a dynamic population with high turnover of individual fish. Some of the young fish must be allowed to survive to reproduce in order to maintain the population. The remaining surplus population is available for harvest.. You must always leave enough young and spawners in the population to continue to reproduce.

The basic goal of fishery biology is to determine the amount of fish that can be removed from the fishery and still have a healthy population. Political, economic and social considerations will influence the final optimum yield figure. The fishery is wasted by measure that are too conservative and decimated if decisions are too liberal.

Carrying Capacity

Habitat that supports a certain amount of fish historically is unlikely to support much more or less than that unless the habitat changes.
When habitat is lost then fewer fish can be supported. Habitat can be lost by

Pollution

loss of wetlands

loss of seagrasses

destruction of spawning areas

changes in freshwater flow- causes change in salinity

Fishery managers can’t change habitat, so they concentrate on how many fish the existing habitat can support. The carrying capacity can change over time as conditions in the habitat change.

I grew up in a family of immigrants so multicultral activities were the norm. My son didn't want to learn spanish when i tried to teach him and I like a fool i relented and kept our converstation to english. But he did get the travel bug from me and my father. At 15 he has been to Brazil, Parguay, Argentina, Mexico and Morehead city (talk about cultural shock:D). Only Mexico has he actually gone with me. This april me and the Greek Grouper Killers (Nick and Nick) are taking him to Galapagos. Now he comes home with Jen and tells me they just signed him up for a summer trip with his english teacher to Greece, Turkey and Italy. Geez oh flip. I remember I was happy to go to Ocean City as a kid. Our children are living in a small world where everything is a fingertip and airplane ride away. Are other parents on here seeing their children visiting coutnries we use to only dream about.

I know Turners daugher went to Korea a couple of years ago and Double D just got back from Costa Rica with his kids. What are some of the Far reaches of the earth that you guys have taken your kids or let them go with others?

I find it really cool that our kids are seeing how the rest of the world lives so they can develop their own opinions of life in the USA.

Alternative animal feed part of global fisheries crisis fix: UBC study

Finding alternative feed sources for chickens, pigs and other farm animals will significantly reduce pressure on the world's dwindling fisheries while contributing positively to climate change, according to University of British Columbia researchers.

"Thirty million tons – or 36 per cent – of the world's total fisheries catch each year is currently ground up into fishmeal and oil to feed farmed fish, chickens and pigs," says UBC fisheries researcher Daniel Pauly (AFS member, ’02), co-author of the Oryx: The International Journal of Conservation article, published online this week.

"Meanwhile, 25 per cent of infants in Peru – which produces half of the world's fishmeal using anchovies – are malnourished," says Pauly.

In the Oryx article, nine of the world's leading fisheries and conservation researchers – including four from UBC – reviewed the effectiveness of past conservation campaigns and propose new strategies to effect swifter and larger-scale changes.

"Globally, pigs and chickens alone consume six times the amount of seafood as US consumers and twice that of Japan," says lead author Jennifer Jacquet, a post-doctoral fellow at UBC's Fisheries Centre. "Ultimately these farm animals have a greater impact on our seafood supplies than the most successful seafood certification program."

"We should work to eliminate the use of tasty fish for livestock production. It's a waste," says Pauly. "Plus, it is not what pigs or chickens naturally eat. When is the last time you saw a chicken fishing?"

Many sustainable seafood campaigns focus on consumers but ignore large-scale market impacts – such as farming demand for fishmeal – and have failed to reach their goals, say the study's authors, which include Enric Sala of the National Geographic Society and Rashid Sumaila and Tony Pitcher of UBC.

After pioneering and distributing more than one million seafood wallet cards – pocket-sized guides that advise consumers of ocean-friendly seafood, the Monterey Bay Aquarium conducted a study that revealed no overall change in the market and that fishing pressures had not decreased for targeted species, the study points out.

"Sustainable seafood certification programs such as wallet cards have raised consumer awareness but are far less effective than targeting mega supermarket chains such as Walmart, Whole Foods and Loblaw through a combination of positive and negative publicity campaigns," says Jacquet, adding that more than 60 per cent of seafood in Canada and half the seafood in the U.S. is sold through supermarkets.

The authors also suggest establishing international standards for labeling sustainable seafood, eliminating harmful fisheries subsidies and leveraging momentum for fisheries conservation through existing global concerns for climate change.

"Global fisheries consume 13 billion gallons of fuel each year just to catch and land fish," says Jacquet. "That's more gas than 22 million cars would use. Energy use would be much higher if we include the fuel used to ship fish further for processing and to market. No discussion of the overall impact of fisheries would be complete without clarifying its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change."

"Overall, we'd like to encourage people to engage more as citizens – as they have with the global climate change movement – and less as mere consumers," said Pauly. "Big problems like overfishing require efforts to be directed at big change."
