Went to feed horses and could here dogs barking down from the barn. Finished the feeding and took off to see what the problem was. 2 LARGE 100# dogs with a mid size dog had a nice 8 pointer bayed in the creek. They had been on him for a while as one hind quarter had a chunk missing and he was very pissed kicking and butting with his rack to defend himself. Didn't want to get close and end up in the battle but had to do something to get the dogs away. 1 left right away with the other 2 not wanting to give up. After they left the buck looked up at me and I clucked as he snorted and tried his best to leave up the steep bank and continued up the wooded hill side favoring the leg without visable damage. Not sure if it had been hit by car or what allowed this deer to get cornered, just didn't want to see dogs win this battle. Guys ask if I shot the deer and I told them I probably would have turned on the dogs before the deer. These dogs roam by our property everyday to visit our contained lab and shitzu getting into the trash and doing what dogs do in the lawn. Picture is off my phone so its alittle fuzzy, good thing that was all I had.

I shot this nice 8 point buck this morning at 9:10. It was one of the slowest mornings that I've seen. I saw one small 6 pointer(almost looked like a spike) at 8:30. I usually see at least 3-8 does every hunt here. At 9 i almost got out of the stand and went to work, but I told myself.."you've sat here thru that storm last week for two days in the driving rain and you sat here this morning in the rain..now it's clearing up...15 more minutes is not going to kill you!!" and 10 minutes later I saw him coming down the same path that I use to walk in.
I've hunted this stand about 3 times a week and have a nice seven pointer on my cam several times. I put my brother in this spot 2 weeks ago and he saw 2 nice bucks. The one that I got was the smaller of the two. Shot him with a Rage using my crossbow at 25 yards...watched him hit the dirt!
His hocks weren't dark at all. I haven't seen ANY chasing in my area here in Wake County.
Missed HIM, yes HIM.
Could not sleep last night thinking about my missed opportunity.

sitting overlooking a small food plot yesterday eve.

Spitting a little rain, not really expecting to see much, standing up in the stand stretching, and whoa nelly there he is.

he stepped out from the back edge of the plot about 250yds from me, walked and in the plot and looked around. got my gun up and cranked the scope, yep, he is a shooter, biggest buck I have seen walking.

he is facing me so not really a good shot, he turns and gets broad side and at the same time, starts to trot towards the right, long narrow plot so I don't think I am gonna get a better shot, so I let one go.

Missed him.

yes HIM.

I got to thinking about it on the ride back. I can't recall missing a deer at any distance since prior to 1994.

Oh well, I have been hitting the ducks better than I usually do, and I was Joking with a mate on the dock, on how I had not missed and that I was probably going to miss my next couple of shots, I just did not think it was gonna be at a buck deer with my tack driver.

dang it.

I killed a nice deer this past week and would like to do a Euro. mount. I live on the sound and was thinking of just skinning the head and hanging it off the dock to let nature do the rest. Would it work or should I stick to boiling.

What is bittersweet to me is that in 1973, the Federal Government condemed and took away our family farm (going back to the late 1700's) as part of the formation of Pee Dee NWR.
Although some good has come of it (I guess), for my family, this is the most expensive duck ever killed.

The new Beretta Perennia sure swings nice and the price is about the same for the two. Does anyone have any experience with the Guerini 12 gauge field models?

With the forcast for a little left over wind and rain we decided to hunt a box in the woods with a pretty good lane right and left. Not much early, at Mid morning we see a big doe to the left crossing lane. Too far and too quick across then almost at same time two family groups on the edge of been field at the other end of lane, not too far but too quick across. Then we spot rear end of one that crossed lane about 50 yds down. Had two different spikes visit a corn pile. Really the only shot opportunity, but waiting on a good buck. Then a nice wide 6 crosses lane. No shots in am and with the bucks moving we decided the lane was not going to offer a good shot. Went for some lunch and to check on Popsy then back to a hidden field with an old sunflower patch, clover patch, and a oats with winter pea patch. Really suprised no deer until a button buck steps out at around 4:15 and and then momma...A big saggy chest Doe at about 90yds...plans where to wait on a buck, but since Wil was entered in a big deer contest for youth day and they don't get much bigger than this in our area Wil takes the shot. Looked like a good hit so we waited to see what else would show. A 4 pt came out a little later followed by a good 8 as light was fading that was pretty wide, yet the tines looked a little short. He walked toward us and we where glassing him trying to make a decision when he turned and went right where the Doe that was shot went into woods. No shot taken. Well the the 7.62x39 did its job as usual, and there was no problem finding the trail. Man that little bullet is bad..bad. Wil is bound to get a good buck soon since for a 9 year old his patience and willingness to pass on smaller bucks has been amazing. His time will come. Did not win the contest, but doe weighed in at 92.5 lbs think he got second.

Hunted the farm in PA yesturday. The morning started slow for me but Zach and Sara were seeing deer. 7:45 a doe came running across the field and jumped the fence into the bull pen a huge 8pt that we have never seen was hot on her tail, he kept her stuck in the bull pen for at least 2 mins but for me felt like an hour this deer was big. Finally she jumped the fence and came running towards the run on my side of the field jumped that fence and came within 35yds from my tree at 100mph with the buck right behind I drew back and waited but no shot the buck never stopped they ran off into the bottom of the woods. A few minutes later a 6pt came and across and went into the bottom bad day to sit up top and not in the bottom. 8:00 Zach sends me a text, Sara has an 8pt in front of her with a bad limp can she take it. I said sure not to have it suffer plus it would be her first deer! She made a great shot 40yds the buck piled up. Congrats Sara. I will post about the afternoon and what was killed have to down load the pics!
