This is going to be a thread that I will expand on over the course of time as memories come back to me. I hope that this will give you an insight as to how my grandfather was and what kind of great person he was, what he meant to me as well as how I got to be who I am today. As time go by I will be posting some pictures of he and I together and a few of just him. Feel free to ask questions, comment or what ever as he was the most influential single person in my life. I come from a close knit family and we still are today. Growing up, I can remember my as a young child, my great grandmother living at our house and my grandmother, grandfather, and mother taking care of her till her passing days. My mother and Uncle James taking care of my grand mother and grandfather till their passing days and now it is my turn to do all that I can for my mom till...well you get the picture.
To add a little more to the picture, I was born on Wrightsville Beach and my mom and I moved to Hewlett's Creek when I was 3 with my grandparents, her mom and dad. Part of this was due to Hazel ripping down the back side of the beach house, and my dad taking off for parts kinda unknown while working for Seaboard Coast Line after he got out of the Marine Core as a Drill Sergeant. Him leaving never really bothered me except for the part of going school in the 50's and being the only kid in school who's parents were divorced but my DaddyPop along with my uncles made sure that I never wanted or need a father figure, a family of pure love.
Introduction...
DaddyPop (my grandfather) was one of the biggest men that I can ever remember growing up as a kid. Her was my hero, teacher and mentor, grandfather and more of a father to me than my Dad. DaddyPop is the biggest reason I am who and like I am today. He was someone that every one should have met or should have in their lives...a giant among giants, a man among men. Some one that would take me out to his shop to carve me a boat with his hatchet so I could tie it to the end of a bamboo pole and pull it up and down the dock. Pull out a big chew of Beach Nut and put it in the wasp sting to take the swelling down. Reach up and grab a spider web from the rafters of the shop when I cut my finger (usually cause I was playing with something sharp that I was told not to mess with) and then pouring Kerosene on it to keep it from getting infected.
A person that sat with me on the dock for hours and teach me how to rig a float and drift it over the mud flat on a rising tide and catch Flounder. The person that taught me how to follow the tracks of a Flounder on a rising tide at night and find him so I could put a 3 prong gig into its head and then how to get that fish into the boat, how to go on a mud flat with a pitch fork and get flounder when you could not see for the muddy water. How to find clams at the end of the oyster rock ( my first job and for a kid in the 3rd grade, I always during the summer had about $35.00 in my pocket to put gas into the boat ( mixed gas was 35 cents a gallon and besides, who needed a car when you had a boat) or eat) and where to sell them. I was rich beyond my wildest dreams. How to sit on the side of the boat during duck season and open oysters so he & I could have lunch.
There is so much more to tell so please stay tuned as I will try to keep this going with weekly or monthly stories.
