May 17 Turkey Hunt

hunted this morning on a farm right outside of ocean pines on route 90. did not hear much gobbling at first light but we heard a few hens. we were bowhhunting because there is houses around. got set up on the edge of the field. put out 2 hen decoys and a ground blind. we set the decoys out at seven yards.

my dad makes a yelp in the direction where they usually roost which is behind us. we both turn that way to see if we can hear any gobbles. about a minute later a BIG hen showed up out of nowhere and was in our decoy spread. this hen stayed within in twenty yards for 45 min. it got as close as five yards. suprised it did not see us because i was taking lots of pictures.

the first hen finally walked off but about two minutes later a smaller hen walked into the spread. this time the hen stayed in the spread for one hour and fifteen minutues. once again, this hen did not see us. did not see any toms but it was an awesome hunt.

big hen.

the one that is the furthest out is real. the two closer ones are decoys.

Great report of a great hunt Jake.

I was south of you a little ways and only heard one gobble this morning. We were also packing a stick and string, and enjoyed the chilly, but great morning in the woods.

Thanks for sharing.

Not always a bad thing to just have a hen up close. They can teach you a thing or two about soft calling. I bet she was purring and putting the whole time she was in front of you. That was probably the dominant hen in your area checking out "a hen" she has never heard. The little one was probably a subordinant hen. if you ever get the time, try picking a copy of Treetop turkeys by woodhaven calls. Neat stuff on this CD about calling up hens, different sounds in the tree, on the ground etc.
Neat pictures.

Those hens are just as ugly as gobblers.
