Gar Bite! This Is Why We Wear Gloves!!!
Check out this video of Tuesdays Longnose Gar Fishing trip with my daughter Shelley. If you think a Gar won't intentionally bite you, take a look at this! This one struck me like a rattlesnake.

Hey Gar-Grabber,
Am I mistaken or are you using a piece of rope with no hooks in it for a lure ? Does the fish's teeth get tangled in the strands and it comes to the boat like that ? |

That's right, I use a homemade strayed nylon rope lure made from good quality nylon rope, a split rig and a zip tie. They are very easy to make and disposable. I only re-use the split rig.

We caught one in a castnet last year trying to catch some bait for a tournament. We ended up with a lot of extra weights to fish with by the time he got done with it.

You just pry it's mouth open and pick, cut and pull until you get it all out then take a fine hair brush and brush the remaining Nylon out. That's called brooming your Gar. Sometimes I just tell people that I just brush their teeth and let'em go!
Good fishin'! |
