Dave Sikorski shoots and scores!

Just got word from Dave that he and a buddy braved the rain and he successfully called in his first bird to the gun for himself and his friend. Two jakes met their maker today! Pics and the story to follow soon. Congrats Dave and John! Awesome dude!

Weather was a little messy for fishing, so we tried plan B.

At first light we had birds gobbling all over the place.

We made a quick move first thing to the field with the lowest grass, and set some decoys. We had birds talking all morning all around us, and got a little rain shower that shut them up.

When the sun came back out there were 5 gobbles going off in a dry impoundment and we waited patiently as they answered to real hens, and our calls too.

After 20 min of straight gobbling they finally toned down and we got ready to make a move. As I slowly stood up to glass the next field over, a gobble thundered out behind us, and a hen answered him within 100 yds to our left.

Oops, better sit tight. 15 more min of light calling and listening to the flock ensued, and John spotted a pair of jakes jogging into the spread. I told John that if he could take the shot then I would back him up, but if he couldn't get his gun up without being busted to just wait and see what happens. The birds made it to 15 yds before some grass blocked his movement, and he finally got his 10 ga to his shoulder and made the shot. The second jake jumped straight up in the air, and when he hit the ground my load of #5's put him to bed.

A great way to spend a rainy Saturday, and help John take his first turkey.

I've gotta thank Ed for letting us enjoy his property and be part of John's first, and my second Turkey.

-D

Thanks all.

If I can get a taxidermy buddy to help, my Jake is gonna be a stuffer in a half strut. Don't want him looking too pretty, just pretty enough to piss off a longbeard.

We could learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp, some are pretty,
some are dull, some have weird names,
and all are different colors....but
they all exist very nicely in the same box.
