I just happen to own a couple of shoe stores in Virginia Beach and am a Pedorthist who specializes in helping people with problem feet.

Most people complain from shoes that are poorly fit and it's important they get shoes in their correct size and width as well as the correct style for the planned use.

If you're Hard To Fit and want a decent Boat Shoe, try Dunham, they make a boat shoe in widths from B to 6E (EEEEEE), sizes from 7 to 18.

Dunham is a division of New Balance Footwear which has comfort and support built into every shoe.

Also, the insoles are removable for those who require additional arch support be either over the counter or custom orthotics.

For those that fish offshore barefoot It is not if but when you will regret it My father stepped on a harpoon head in the pit when I was 12 This happened when it pulled from a large Mako and landed in the pit While hanging onto the tail he got pushed back and stepped on it It happened so fast there was no time to react 85 stitches in his heel/foot Not to mention all the dope he was on for a week
If you need boots look to the muck boot and have a pair of orthodics made for your feet Don't buy the shat in the store have them made to your foot
Same for the shoes/sneakers
I'd also recommend a foot cush for the helm and bait station
Lastly get out and do some walking or running in the shoe you buy This will bring out any weakness before you are on your feet for 24hrs or more Not only that losing some heft is always good for the dogs

sperry canvas sneakers. the only place in the world they should be allowed. i hate people in sneakers. i usually sit in cape may, watching all the FAT tourists, wearing sneakers, licking ice cream, and laugh. and dont even get me started about what to wear on an airplane. we should go back to the old days where you had to be dressed in something other than a dirty sweat suit and SNEAKERS! they are not a dress shoe!.............sorry, i lost control.

Smile Let's Talk Arch Supports!!!

Let's talk Arch Support!!!

If your boat shoes have removable insoles you may be able to replace the insoles with over the counter arch supports with extra cushioning.

You can go to the arch support stores and pay an outragous price for over the counter supports (I won't name any names), you know the ones, they have 30 minute informercials; or you can go to the average shoe store or athletic store and purchase a simple inexpensive off the shelf arch support.

The 2 most popular supports in my stores are the Spenco Polysorbe Cross Trainer insoles which have extra cushioning, slight heel elevation (great for plantar fasciatis - heel pain) and a moderate arch.

The other is a support made by Warm Springs which has extra cushioning, extra arch and a very nice metatarsal support to help offload the ball of the foot.

Both insoles are reasonable and durable. There are lots of other brands, styles, etc. you just need to try them on and see what works best for your feet.

I make custom arch supports for people with severe foot deformities and also for diabetics who are at risk of ulceration and amputation. Not everyone needs custom supports and my reccomendation is to try the over the counter supports first and see if they offer some relief.

Boating is definitely hard on the feet and it's important to have a good foundation when on board to help avoid problems that can arrise later on.

I hope this info helps!

Thanks a bunch. Had an opportunity to talk to buddy Mikey and decided that the trick is many different pairs. Cool thing about that is your info can build upon that thought and just get insoles (my case) heel supports to keep the air in dem dogs.

Here's to a great season for all

Sperry STS Pro Angler, dries super quick and has a really nice arch support so your back, knees, and feet aren't destroyed at days end.

I don't think they make them anymore though.

Hey lucian, Ive seen you post for a while, didnt know you were a pedorthist. I got just got back from temple Univ. in Philly from their two week pedorthic school. I work for a custom orthotic lab over on the eastern shore of maryland.

After having irish setters and sperrys here in the store for a long time we are trying something new. They are called OTB's (http://www.otbboots.com/) Its what the seals use and seem real happy with them. We designed a new inlay to go along with them for Rx people. Slimline, stable and waterproof. I hope to have a pair soon and will let the board know if they withstand the season.

Vin,

Hit Guy Cotton USA in New Bedford! They make a boot that is SOOOO comfy even at Riptide speeds. They are made for com guys on deck for days at a time. They are warm, dry, easy to clean and look at the cushion on the heels! My feet thank me every time I put them on.
