2011 White Marlin Open Winner Loses Out on Big Payday
The scales at the 2011 White Marlin Open closed on Friday, resulting in the winning boat losing out on $615k for not entering the tournament’s top levels, otherwise known as ‘Calcutta.’ The winner, Wee Wun IV out of Ocean City Maryland, weighed in an 88.5-lb white marlin on the last day of the contest, claiming the first place prize of $289,063.00. Unfortunately for them, the real payday was awarded to the second place crew, Tighten Up, who chose to enter all the billfish Calcutta, resulting in a win of over $750k.
The added entry levels in the tournament are commonly referred to as Calcutta’s, and each Calcutta has a bigger price tag to enter. The top Calcutta which the Wee Wun IV didn’t enter was $5,000 and for that reason they lost out on $600,000. The guys from Tighten Up should send Wee Wun IV a nice Christmas gift for their big mistake.
