It's not like any day in Cabo is dull but day 2 at the Bisbee's Black and Blue was filled with action and excitement. I got the privilege of being aboard the tournament start boat provided by Baja Cantina and was in the midst of 145 boats as they blasted out to hit the fishing grounds during the second of three daily shotgun starts past the famous Arch outside the harbor here. With everything from center consoles to sportfishing battlewagons tearing up the water it is an indescribable feeling to be in the middle of it and the photos were incredible. You can see the photos here and there are even more to come with the final day of competition yet to come.
The boats didn't take long to get into the action and fish were breaking just past the starting line as competition began. Within the first few hours there were over 20 releases as boats hit sailfish, striped marlin along with tuna, dorado and undersized blues and blacks. The action kept up all day long like that and the hookup and release calls came faster than we could keep up.
There was only one fish weighed in during the day today and it was brought to the scale by the Bad Market. The crowds cheered all the way along as it was carted to the scales and everyone knew that unlike yesterday there was no question about it being a qualifier. The fish was fat as a barrel and even had a decent sized dolphin stuck in its throat although it ate a lure to get hooked up. The crew was ecstatic knowing that with an hour and a half left they had a good lead and were almost assured of a great prize. The 457-pound fish was worth approximately $200,000 since they were not in across the board but it was a sizeable check nonetheless.
There were still several boats hooked up at the 5 p.m. lines out call but in the end nothing was boated so the remainder of the 1.6 million dollar daily jackpot is rolled over into day three. This pushes the one fish daily jackpot on day three to over 2 million dollars and if a fish is caught that tops the 457-pound mark it will be a scorching win of well over three million dollars for the single catch. Needless to say the boats will be pushing hard tomorrow as the purse reaches higher exponentially each day.
We will be here live at the scales with streaming webcams and also bringing you the live VHF radio feed from the Baja Cantina. We will continue to give away great gear from Melton's Tackle and Pelagic so if you haven't entered the drawing then get on top of it, watch the webcam and win big without even coming to the show. All that you need to do is go through the Bisbee's Black and Blue tournament photos here, grab a favorite and post it in the day three thread. We're watching carefully and putting all of the usernames in a hat. With a little help from the Cantina girls and others we're doing drawings all day long to get you some cool stuff. Don't be surprised if we even pull a couple of extra special prizes out of the closet for you all on the final day here in Cabo.
