"So many fish; so little time"-LBI Fishing Report 8-31-08 By Bob Misak
This week has been productive with reports of good fishing everywhere. Outside the fluke fishing is much better with big fish being hauled in at up to 80 ft. of water. Lee Stocker brought in a 10 lb. flatty that he caught in 82 ft. of water. The tuna fishing is still real productive out at the canyons, with bigger blue fins hitting the scales. Brian Griek, a regular at the shop, brought in a 30 lb. tuna this week, but some fish in the 150 lb. range have been reported. So you might want to hit the tire wreck or down off the Coast guard station for some last minute fluke heroics.
In front of the inlet off the jetty things are off the hook. I hung around the jetty on Saturday night and saw guys battling big blues for about an hour on bunker, and guys were jigging keeper weakfish one after the other. The weaks were going nuts on the schools of spearing, and it was quite a spectacle to watch. The blackfish are just as thick as they were last week, and my son Bob Jr. and my nephew Jason had 10 keeper blackfish on Friday, keeping an 18 and a 17 inch fish. The tog are as easy to catch right now as they're going to be all season, so head to the shop for some crabs and have at it! The jetty is on fire, so take heed!
On the beach, the bass are starting to make their appearances, though only the bass at heart are catching fish on a regular basis. The blues are up and down Loveladies, so the fall run on the beach is right around the next bend. The kingfish continue to increase in size and number, and can be had on the finger jetties with sand worms or clam baits.
The bay is hot as well right now, with the chumming guys absolutely slaying the 16 inch kingfish, provided you drive around and locate a good school. As I mentioned, you never know what surprise you're going to bring to the boat side with a chum slick! The guys chumming weakfish are limiting quickly, as the bay is just stacked with spikes now. So you can pretty much pick your poison right now and be successful, so head down to B.L.B.T. and see Basil, nick, and Josh, and they'll always send you in the right direction. Until Wednesday, everybody have a great close to the summer season and be careful. Good luck and great fishing! (By the way, Ol' moon enlightened us with his beach report this week. He said "phooey to those cow-nosed rays!)
