Fresh Bunker, Live Eels and Bloodworms are in stock!Received: Sunday, September 21, 2008 9:13 PM Subject: Fishing Report

I fished Brant Beach from 10:30-12:30pm this afternoon. Caught 4 blues on mullet (all 18-24in). Had a BIG run off on a bunker chunk as I was cleaning up, and actually giving away my leftover bait, I hear people yelling that the rod was getting hit. Ran down about 20 yards as a fellow fisherman grabbed the rod and gave it to me. Fish was on for a short while. Took a decent amount of line, but then came off. I think he started swimming toward the beach right when a wave was breaking about 20 yards off the beach. Think it was just enough slack for a split second… Not sure what it was; very large blue or bass. Several other blues were caught on mullet in a few yard stretch. Beautiful day. ~ Jim

The action this week was best described as "more fishing, than catching". Even though we were able to put some nicer weakfish 23+" in the box some trips were a real struggle. The stiff NE winds that we encountered did not help much as it took some of the cards out of our deck that we could play. The amount of bait in the bay is staggering, this may contribute to the lethargy of the game fish as there is a constant supply of bait of various types for them to snack on. As the bays water temps continue to dip, this should spark some fantastic action in the coming weeks. We have been using a combination of live peanut bunker and artificials for most of our fishing. ~ Capt. Steve Purul, Reel Fantasea Charters 609-290-1217

The bunker stocks are in good shape if the seas off of the Ferris wheel are any indication. It was "wall to wall" bait from depths of 20' to past 60', and they were further out. Try as I might I couldn't keep a bait in the water, the bluefish were everywhere. Plenty of markings, there had to be Bass there, but how to get to them? I gave up after 5 hours, and I didn't see another boat the whole time. "The REA I" ~ C.V.

Summer's over and we're back from a couple weeks of vacation, so it's time to start thinking about fishing again. I took the boat out for a couple hours this morning to recharge the batteries (both the boat's and mine), and found the weakfish were still around and cooperating. They seem to be keying on peanut bunker right now, so live bait and larger plastics are working pretty well. Unfortunately, they are moving towards the inlet so it looks like we've only got another week or so of catching them in the bay before the action moves outside.

These last few cooler nights have sent the bay water temps down into the low to mid 60s, which is probably what started the weakies heading for the ocean. I'm hopeful that this will mean an earlier than usual start to our fall striper run in the bay. A pretty decent body of fish hung around the area all summer long, and I'm thinking the combination of cooler water and an immense amount of bait inside might get them started a couple of weeks earlier than normal this year. I'll probably start looking for them out back in another week or so if the evening temperatures stay on the cool side.

I've still got a few prime weekdays open this fall, so if you're thinking of getting some bass this fall now's the time to get the trip booked. ~ Capt. Jack Shea, "Rambunctious" Barnegat Bay Fishing Charters
