I was out Sunday at Barnegat Ridge for the first time in weeks. As we throttled back a mile shy of the North Ridge I started to let the first rod out, a red and white shorty cedar plug and about 20 yards into it, a 10 pound false albacore smoked it and we had our first fish on. The bite had that intensity the whole time we were there. I could rarely get a fourth rod out in the spread before two of the rods were doubled over screaming line. Cedar plugs and jap feathers were the best. We even caught one flat lining a spearing on a spinning rod while waiting for someone to boat a hooked fish. It was awesome fishing. The water at the Ridge is 70.5 degrees and cobalt blue, loaded with bait and fish readings. We finished up in the bay with a few kingfish on shedder crabs.
Yesterday we set out with live grass shrimp and shedder crabs and nailed the weakies, anywhere from just legal to one fish that was 4 pounds. We also caught needlefish, one small striper, and little blues that have graduated from being called snappers because they are biting through the 20 pound fluorocarbon leaders now. We also caught a 23 inch striper out on the inlet jetty.
The weather and sea condition looks good for tomorrow, Wed., Sept. 17, so I am running a short notice open boat Barnegat Ridge trip to go beat up some albies on light tackle. I am going to troll until we hit a good piece of water and then start a spearing slick. The cost is $225 per person for two people and if we have three people it drops to $175 per person. I will be available all day and night on my cell at 732.330.5674. We leave at 6AM and return around 2 PM..
I am booked for Thursday and Friday, but available this Sat, Sun & Mon, Sept. 20-22. The wind is going to blow early on, but the bay is still fishable and the weakfishing is turning on with all size fish. A huge body of peanut bunker moved into Barnegat Bay and the weakies and small blues are gorging on them, so besides my usual anchor up and chumming, we can now run and gun on surface action while casting lures. If the forecast is good for any of these three open days, I will also look to get out to Barnegat Ridge for albies or the Mud Hole for tuna.
