The photo above was taken by Mark Majerus from Captains Cove, on board his boat the "Goin' CATchin'", which is a snazzy name for his power Catamaran. All of the below species were caught (back in late July) within a mile of Capt. Bob's Marina: spot, black sea bass, sea robin, flounder, blue fish, croaker, king fish, bat ray (Mark stated it was the first he has ever caught - probably due to the release of the Batman film back then
clearnose skate, smooth dogfish shark, weak fish/gray trout and a star fish - which surprised him since he didn't even know they were around this area. In addition to this variety of fish, he also had a dozen of clams and crabs. He brought up the fish using squid and minnows with a #6 baitholder hook or a 2/0 kahle hook.
To quote Mark " Simply an astonishing number and kinds of fish!"
Thank you, Mark, for sharing this photo.
There is something that I really admire with Capt. Charlie Koski and wife, Colleen, their appreciation of the beauty around them - especially when they are working. This photo is another shared photo from them. If you take a closer look, you will not only see an awesome sunset but a osprey nest as well. This must have been taken near Chincoteague Point, down where you use to be able to loop around that sandbar in route to the Four Mouths area. I know there is a osprey nest on top of the pilings there. Capt. Charlie did not mention the location. Point being - isn't it just breath-taking? Thank you so much, Capt. Charlie for sharing this beauty with us!
If you are an avid flounder angler, sometime during your lifetime of fishing for these flatties, you must have come across one. This is actually the favorite meal of a flounder. I've always referred to them as crustaceans, however, the proper name is a Mantis Shrimp. Many a flounder has been cleaned on the fish cleaning tables at Capt. Bob's and the fisherman would bring one into the Tackle Shop or ask me to come out to the tables, in awe of what they had discovered. Kim Wilheim from Hamstead, MD, brought this one up when fishing with Capt. Charlie Koski. She re-baited with it in hopes of finding a hungry monster with a big mouth out there - unfortunately, I was working!!!
