"Slick" on chummin'-Fishing report-08-27-By Bob Misak
Well, the fluking outside is in excellent shape with nice flatties being taken from 40 to 70 ft. of water. My brother- in- law Don Golden fished down off the Coast Guard station and caught 8 fish to up to 23 inches. The tires are producing nice fluke as well, and the tuna fishing out at the canyons is off the hook, with blue fins to 250 lbs. coming in. The head boats are also reporting decent catches of fluke, and as is customary in the last couple weeks of the season, it looks like things will end on a high note. So head over to the shop for some killies and squid or some live spots and get it while the getting's good.
On the surf the king fishing is picking up with fish being caught early in the morning along the finger jetties. There are some blues running up and down the beach, and a bass is being pilfered here and there, mostly out on the end of the south jetty. Also on the south jetty are the blackfish, and even with a one fish limit guys are doing well out there, with 6 and 8 lb. fish being caught regularly.
The bay is producing some awesome chumming trips right now, and the blowfish will come within the next 2 weeks. Weakfishing is great for those guys chumming with grass shrimp, and they're limiting out quickly, provided you find a nice quiet spot to fish. I went clam chumming in the bay out near Meyer's hole on Sunday, and we literally slammed the king fish. I fished with Christian Quinn and his son Christian Jr., and we had at least 40 kings, with the bigger ones going around 16 inches, so the bay chumming gets my vote for this week. I also got a nice surprise with a 3 lb. 6 oz. gray triggerfish off the chum slick! A nice hefty trigger at 16 inches or so is a nice fight on light tackle. I'll tell ya, you should head to the shop for 10 or 12 chum logs and find a nice spot in the bay to slay the table fish. This time of year, you never know what's going to come over the side of the boat in a chum slick. And by the way, using 2 anchors will definitely up your catch while chumming.
And before I go, the big fluke of the week actually came out of the inlet in front of lighthouse, and it was caught off the jetty on a live snapper and tipped the scales at 13 lb. 8 oz., with an 11 lb. fish and a 10 and change coming to the shop just before that. All 3 fish were caught on live snappers. So until the season ends in 2 and a half weeks, now is the time for big flatties. So we'll see you at B.L.B.T., O.K.? By the way, (Oh, never mind. Ol' moon will show up sooner or later and enlighten us with his philosophies) Good luck and great fishing.
