August 10, 2008The Homan family had their annual reunion and part of their weekend festivities always includes a fishing trip on the Orient Star ll.This year there were 10 of their grand children aboard to help their dads bring in many big bluefish .They also caught some jumbo porgies. Terrific family. Terrific fun.
On Saturday, Vernon Jackson plus family and friends joined us for a great day of fishing out east. We started out drifting for blues in the Gut and there were fish everywhere. There were a few bass in the catch as well. We switched to scup and headed to Fishers Island for very good porgy fishing with some fish nearing 2.5 pounds.
Rich Clark and his buddies from Staten Island called for a fluke trip. I had my reservations about fluking because the porgies have been terrorizing us and the fluke were very scattered. The day started out very slowly as the drift was negligable and the skates were hungry. Resisting the temptation to switch to porgies or go bluefishing the boys persisted. As soon as the flood began to move Frank Vivenzo landed the first of his 3 keepers as well as a nice seabass. We landed 12 very nice fluke to 4.5 pounds as well as some seabass, porgies and a few blues as well.
