Jeff and I decided to take a day to relax inshore fishing today. Our first stop was at the OIFC to check in with Captain Chris and Boston Rob and to stock up on fuel, minnows, drinks and food. The tide was high so we knew we'd have to wait to catch bait. The weather this morning was beautiful and Tubbs was as flat as I'd ever seen it. For some reason I really noticed how pretty it is back in there. We started out fishing the Tale Chaser around a couple of sand bars, then docks and back in the creek. We caught flounder, all be it they were undersized. The as the tide started to fall it was like someone flushed Tubbs and we had to high tail it out. We stopped to catch mullet minnows which are abundant and good sized right now.
We then headed to out favorite Red Fish/Flounder spot on the ICW. I'd sent some tourists there earlier this week and they had success. We came up zero on the Reds and one on Flounder. I guess if you can't do it you write about it. Maybe that's why Brant doesn't have me running charters. On our way back in there was a boat sitting exactly where we were, and he was drilling the Red Fish.
We had changed location to the concrete wall at Shallotte Point. We got positioned, I had just set anchor and cast out when I caught a flash out of the corner of my eye, and heard a great big Ker-Splash!!! At first I thought someone had thrown something over the wall. Then Jeff yelled out "Daddy, pull up the anchor, hand me a life jacket ,drop the anchor " then he jumped over board. I looked up and saw a man standing at the top of the wall with a leash and a dog collar in his hand. I looked down and Jeff was fighting the current and had a Golden Retriever in his hand. We pulled the dog in the boat and headed to the gentleman's dock. I was afraid the Retriever would jump out of the boat so I had a death grip on her. But she loved the boat ride and once on shore she didn't want to get out.
As it turns out the man was dog sitting for his grandchildren and Ginger, the Retriever took off and ran off the wall. He is an extremely nice and gracious man who shops with us at the OIFC, and if you've ever been here you know we are all dog lovers. So I guess you could say we caught several undersized flounder and one 70 pound Golden Retriever. Not too shabby. I really didn't embellish the story too much either…really.
