Finally some warmer water. The bay temp was 78 degrees when we left the dock Friday morning. Our party was Mary Helen Taylor, her husband Rick, and friends Sharon and Scott, all of whom were on LBI for an annual full week family reunion.
Going down the bay we normally expect to see small Bluefish chasing bait around the tip of LBI but this morning we had heavy tern activity just south of 110 buoy. We picked up 5 Blues on light tackle spinning tackle using 2/0 Clark Spoons and short wire leaders. The greenhead flies then got too serious and we left for the Ocean.
On Little Egg Reef, we worked a favority spot for 6 drifts seeing lots of Sea Bass on each drift but not even a bite. The surface temp was 72, a lot better then previous trips.
We moved off to another favorite spot and spent the rest of the half day trip there catching keeper Sea Bass and a few tiny Sea Robins.
Sea conditions were lovely, 2 feet or less with a nice soft breeze.
The result of the day left us thinking that the ocean is still heavily layered with the warmer water at the top and frigid water at the bottom. It may be less frigid than a week ago but still cold enough to retard the bite. The fish finders are showing plenty of fish and HUGE quantities of bait. We were surrounded by dozens of Bunker pods the whole trip. The Bluefish are missing a good feed.
Call to check for open dates.
