Made our first run to the offshore grounds for 08, left Manasquan a little after midnight and pulled into the eastern edge of the west wall around 4:45am, wow what a ride out best I've ever had. Lines out for 15 mins and the port shotgun goes off with a decent fish. Looking to bust a tuna cherry, we put the newbie on the first fish, he lost it and felt absolutely terrible about it, after some good natured ribbing, I unfortunately gave the trip the kiss of death by saying "hey we were only trolling for 15mins, we will get the next one". Needless to say the next one never came, we trolled everywhere the mouth, tough, 100 sq, it all looked good, nice breaks, blue water, weed lines just no fish. Around 12:00 we decided to start working our way west when we came across some life around the west elbow. I started to drill a hole and we finally got our second knock down of the day, only problem was what I thought was a tuna turned out to be a Marlin, second problem was out of a seven rod pattern he grabbed one of the two 30's all the rest were fifties. By the time the crew cleared the lines the reel only had about 6 or 8 wraps left on it, I backed down as fast as I could and put about a quarter of the line back on. Just as I was getting ready to back down on it again, she came gray hounding across the stern, making 10 or 12 quick jumps. Nice fish about 300lbs, unfortunately the line broke and she was gone. Stayed an extra hour in the same general area but could not find some meat for the box. Unbelievable ride home, purposely run right down the mudhole, lots of life around the glory and chicken.
