Governor's Council on Recreational Fishing Funding to Meet July 14
The DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife will host the second meeting of the Governor's Council on Recreational Fishing Funding at 7 p.m. Monday, July 14 in the meeting room at the new Division of Soil and Water field office at the western end of Pilottown Road in Lewes.
This advisory council was created as part of House Bill 107, which extended recreational fishing license requirements to saltwater fishermen and recreational crabbers and clammers. Passed into law in late June 2007, the legislation also included provisions for a new seven-member advisory council to be appointed by the Governor to provide advice to the Division of Fish and Wildlife for spending the new license revenue on recreational fishery-related construction priorities.
The first council meeting, held on April 22 in Dover, was an orientation meeting at which council members were given notebooks depicting each fishing access area along with descriptions of what maintenance issues were pressing. In addition to the seven appointed voting members, the council includes as non-voting members two members of the General Assembly, Senator Robert Venables from Laurel and Representative Gerald Hocker of Ocean View, as well as a designee from the Division of Fish and Wildlife. Voting members are Capt. Bill Baker, Eric Burnley, Jack Carpenter, Floyd Morton, Ralph Newberry, Bernie Pankowski, and Capt. David Russell.
The members of the Governor's Council on Recreational Fishing Funding will be arriving for the meeting a little early to inspect the progress on the new Division of Fish and Wildlife boat ramp and parking lot next to the Division of Soil and Water field office.
The council meeting is open to the public, but attendees should be advised that parking opportunities are limited as the area is still an active construction site. To reach the meeting site from Lewes, head west along Pilottown Road, cross over Canary Creek and look for the new construction just past the U.S. Coast Guard Station.
