Hook Up Sportfishing Charters

Wow, how to start the Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report this time Buoys and Gulls? One of the first reporting periods where there is simply not a lot going on as far as fishing for and then K-atching Marlin or Tuna. Okay, lets begin anyway. First, as has been the case for about two months now, the colder water holding in the usual hot spots on the Pacific Ocean side of Cabo San Lucas has made these areas like the Golden Gate and San Jaime Bank non-productive. Temperatures in the mid-sixties , or lower, have driven away our big game species with no immediate end in site for the Pacific to pick up. So, all the action is only on the Sea of Cortez. And what action there is has been concentrated mostly in the area of Gordo Bank located just off San Jose. At th e start of this reporting period they were finding Striper Marlin. Within a few days the Marlin were still there and that's the good news. The bad news they stopped eating and thus the bite ended. Maybe the full moon, maybe too much bait in the water at the Gorda Bank and maybe, maybe, well, that is why we call it fishing and not the catching sport. BUT WAIT! All is not lost for the past five days the Cabo San Lucas fishing fleet has discovered a booming hot spot for Dorado chasing a large concentration of Sardenas. And this new exciting days of fishing for Dorado has been just past Gorda Bank North about 6-8miles. The Dorado school is pretty large and even some nice Wahoo have been mixed in. This area is named Destiladers. Wish I could, like I have been able for about a year now, report you'll find Marlin at this Spot and Dorado at that spot and maybe even Tuna over there but for this report it is just not happening.

Now, allow me to feature a few Fishing Warriors who have Hooked Up on our Hook Up Charter Boats. Traveling to Cabo San Lucas from Morganfield, KY. was Mr. Brock and his party of anglers. They fished on Hook Up I with Captain Alex and traveled seven miles out from the Horseshoe and caught a real nice Dorado. ( See their picture at the weigh station) Mr. Brock said "Good fishing and great crew performance!" Jimmy Martin, from Greenville, NC also fished on Hook Up I with Captain Alex on May the 29th. Captain Alex wanted to explore the 1150, which had gone off big time for Marlin just 7-10 days before. Wouldn't you know it that just a few miles before hitting the 1150 whammo, a hook up. Their K-atching report you ask? One nice Dorado and one reel screaming on hook up arm bending Striper Marlin that put on a real show befor being released. Mr. Martin said, Miguel ( deck hand) and Alex were great to fish with and I highly reccomend them." Ready for this? On the same boat, Hook Up I, same Captain and on the same day angler Rafael Gonzales from Cuernavaca, Moreles wnet out fishing and he di some real nice K-atching too. The count, 1-Wahoo and 3-Dorados. (See Rafael's picture holding a Dorado). He said, " Tod excelente, Muy bien Capitain y Tripulacion ( Good captain and crew and everything was excellent."

To recap, it has been real slow in Cabo San Lucas for fishing. The Marlin bite is totally off however when fishing one can pick away and maybe get lucky. Maring are out there however just not biting. The Dorado bite is booming seven miles past the Gorda and a few Wahoo mixed in. Now, our commercial message. Best Fishing Locations

The best, and almost only, fishing locations in Cabo San Lucas right now is all on the Sea of Cortez side. The only hot spot as this was written was at the Gordo Bank and just seven or so miles past Gordo at Destiladers. This spot has found a booming Dorado bite with some Wahoo mixed in. The 1150 still holds Marlin however the quantity is considerably down from weeks ago and for the most part they are not biting.

Weather Conditions

The weather in Cabo San Lucas has been fairly consistent all during this reporting period. At the beginning the daytime air temperatures were at 90 F (33/C). By th e end of May and first few days into June daytime air temperatures in Cabo increased to 93 then 95 F (33-35/C). The nights, at the coolest, was recorded at 73 F (23/C) and this temperature held steady all week long. Beautiful warm T-Shirt evenings in the eighties. Skies too were consistent day by day with those Clear Cabo Blue skies without clouds. Towards the end there were a few, very few, scattered clods at 20,000 foot ceilings. Humidity ranged from13-33% and that Buoys and Gulls makes for real comfortable days no matter the ninety degree heat. But remember anglers, we are talking about Cabo San Lucas city for with the breezy sea conditions it is a bit, mornings a lot, cooler. The worst for last, it has been real breezy at sea with averaging 12 MPH winds making it choppy at best. Mostly though the sea saw (get it sea saw) whitecapping conditions with a moderate chop. Mostly 4-5 foot waves from the South/Southwest at 13 second periods. Visibility constant at 15 miles and a real unsafe UV Factor usually 9 one two days at 15. Folks, that is real dangerous so never forget to put on sunscreen -please. Especially at sea with that water glare making conditions worse.

Average Water Temperatures

Should you have been reading this Hook Up Fish Report regularly then you know that in Cabo San Lucas the Sea of Cortez heated up over a month ago while the Pacific Ocean cooled way down. Still true for this reporting period. The Pacific started at 62-63 F at the Golden Gate and San Jaime Bank. Even though still non productive for fishing the water at the Double "G" Spot and San Jaime has, at last, warmed to 72-74 F Degrees. We shall watch this as it may mean a new "Fishing Hole" will open up in the Pacific. I hope so, well see. The Sea of Cortez started with the 95 at 75F, the 1150 and Gordo at 76F and Cabrillo at 75F as well as the Cabo San Lucas bay. Stayed pretty much that way for several days until Cabo Bay heated to 76F, good for swimmers, and 95 and 1150 went to 77F. Gordo jumped to 79-80 F degrees mostly from all the over eighty degree water from up North in the East Cape areas. And now, here we are just inside the first few days of June where the Pacific at the hot spots are now at 75 approaching 76 F Degrees. Gordo Bank on the Sea of Cortez has reached 80F. The 95 and 1150 now at 78-79 F. It is warming up for some real Hot Fishing in Cabo San Lucas indeed - I hope. Really conditions could become explosive for the K-atching any day now.

Whats Working?

What is working best right now in Cabo San Lucas is Sardenas and Caballito. Yes, usually always in Cabo San Lucas live Mackerel are the best however right now the water is too warm and there are no Mackerel around.& nbsp; Trolled lures working best are Mean Joe Green, and Petrolero.

7 Day Forecast

The forecast for Cabo San Lucas appears to look like what we have been experiencing lately. Daytime air temperatures shall range from highs of 93-95 F (34-36/C). Nighttime lows, again the same at 73F (23/C). Humidity shall remain real comfortable in the 30% range while visibility shall be seen at 15-20 miles. Most every day you will find that Cabo Spanish Blue Sky draping you, because of clear days, with all that sunshine. Remember Buoys and Gulls –Sunscreen! And, at long last, the Cabo San Lucas forecast is for "Light Winds." Been a long time for sustained light winds. Great for calmer seas so anglers love calm winds thus calm seas. Not so great for the sun bathers for usually those Cabo San Lucas breezes cool you off from that torturous hot sun during the day. However, by light we mean 4-6 MPH so some wind is better than none at all. Let us look for the Surface Sea Temperatures to warm still a little more as June is here and July summer is approaching. And as I told you I shall keep an eye on that warming trend that just began in the Pacific at the Golden Gate and San Jaime Bank.
