At this time, pending submission and approval by the IGFA, a new world record weakfish was captured by Dave Alu on the night of May 6th. Dave was fishing with Captain Rich Swisstack of the Shore Catch Guide Service. Rich was guiding Dave on a late night/early morning trip fishing from the beaches along the north side of Raritan Bay when he scored the fish.
The fish was weighed on a certified scale at the Tackle Box in Hazlet and hit the 19-pound, 12-ounces mark. The current world record is shared by two anglers and stands at 19 pounds, 2 ounces. The first was caught at Jones Beach, NY by Dennis Sweeny and also holds the New York state record. The other current record holder is William Thomas who caught his in Delaware Bay. Both of the current records were caught in the 1980's.
We will have more details and photos as they become available, but here is one shot of the giant tiderunner, courtesy of Captain Swisstack.
