Finally got er' done. Tuna/Mahi were non existent (at least around the 400 line when were we working the break) but we could hear the reports of blue hook ups and sightings so we put Ilanders and Large ballys as well as some MC Super Chuggers and Wide Ranges short near the teasers. Saw one tailing but we could not get him to come in. 30 min. later one appears under the Super Chugger (Purple/Pink) and wanders toward the boat and swats at a naked…but then gets totally keyed in on a green/yellow boone teaser. Will not get away from it. Pull it as fast as possible and finally the fish looses interest but is now right next to us. I see him peel back so I pop and drop the Super Chugger and she slams the shit out of it. SNAP, mainline (brand new Diamond 80) breaks on contact. DAMN. Capt Dave yells she's still back there so I move over to the other flat (BW Ilander with large bally) and it swims right past it then turns around, I drop it back and see the fish turn and can tell it picks it up. Short couple of seconds and I push the drag up and we're in business! Great aerial show and some speeding up and changing directions to keep it tight while I crank like mad from the chair. Fish settles in, we back down and gain a lot of ground. We note that the fish is staying deep so we're 10-15 min. into it and decide to go after it and get the leader for the release which we do but soon after the fish takes off like a shot. It takes me 25 more minutes to get the fish to where we can leader it up safely. Dave does a great job on the wheel and Doug does as well on the leader (his first Blue on the leader). We bill her up and remove the hook. So I not only got to spot it, hook it and fight it I get to swim it beside the boat for the release. Just awesome.
Thank you Dave (FINS), Doug, Martin, John and Ken for the help. What a sweet day. Consenses was the fish was 275 or so…I have no way to say but will have some pics later…
Bad part was after I got creeked at Shallowbag bay and while climbing out on a metal ladder I slashed my calf and need 12 stitches to get squared away…at least I have a story to go along with the scar!!
Tight lines,
Glenn
