April 1st Tunatime Sportfishing Report By Capt Sal Campanile:
Warmer water has moved in over El Banco along with lots of tuna and schools of big hungry red and cubera snapper. It was non-stop action on 20-60 lbs yellowfin on Sunday and we were the only boat out there until about noon …I'm not kidding! Did you ever get the feeling you got to the cookie jar first?!
Fast trolling small hex-jet feathers was the ticket, one long shotgun(wtfb) with one off of each outrigger 40 yards back , small Braidrunner in the short corner , this spread lets me make frequent u-turns with no worries and when the bite is on, 3 is all you need. The Penn 16 VSX's were buzzing all morning as we made pass after pass over the seamounts. Our customers finally begged for a time out. Rest?? we don't rest.
So while they're eating sandwiches and gulping down gatorade, Oscar (my deckhand) and I start jigging and before you can say pass the chips we're hooked up to our favorite toothy creatures of El Banco…big mean cubera snappers. "Drop the sandwich and take the rod" I barked as the customers gazed at me for mercy …but I would have non of that…reel , reel , reel!!! 20 minutes later and we got color - red that is - and a pair of 20lb snapper hit the ice.
On the next drop the rod almost flew out of my hands before my jig got halfway to the bottom. Fish on!! Who wants the rod?!? There were no takers so I decide to reel her in myself; once in a while the capt's gotta show them how it's done. Twenty minutes later , no make that 30 minutes later (what the ??) we've got color again and it's the fattest yellowfin of the day(go figure). All of 60 pounds and she kicked my butt real good on a Shimano 4500 spinner on a Stalker rod ( thanks Lee - good stuff! ).
Trolling away we picked up 2 gaffer dorado and by the time 2 more boats steamed our way the customers were ready to call it a day and get back to the pool and cold pacificos. The report from Roca Corbetena was jumping tunas with lock jaw and massive schools of 30-40 lb red snapper moving around on the surface in broad daylight!! Inside the cold water had the surfers wearing wetsuits and the roosterfish have some serious lockjaw as well..No worries though, we've got a lot of warmer water coming our way.
We're booking up fast for "cow season" and if you've dreamed of hooking up with a 300+ lb yellowfin don't wait any longer…..Contact us at www.tunatimesportfishing.com and we'll hook you up !!!
