All I can say is finally. You name it and it has keep us at the dock but Thursday everything came together to make a run out to the stream to see what was biting. Now where to go? I checked the sea surface temp. and found no good shots for more than 3 days back. Due to the blow no boats had been out for over a week so no help there. We left it up to Mother Nature, the wind was coming out of the NE so the best ride out was to head SW. We punched in the Swansboro hole and slowly cut through the thick fog. About 30 miles out the sun started to crack through the clouds and we went from a few hundred feet visibility to miles. A mile from our stop I pulled back and the lines went in right at 8am.
About the time we got everything out and settled in the planer rod pops what could it be? got color………and it is YELLOW! We get it near the boat and this fish some how goes from the side of the boat to over the motor and caught up in the steering linkage. We are able to get a gaff in raise the motor and clear it out and in the box about that time another line goes off, we get that one in the box no problems. From that point on I don't think we went more than 30 minutes without a bite, some times a single most of the time 3-4 on at a time. For some reason one or two would come unbutton after the first part of the run? We ended up putting 6 or so Yellows in the box with a few small blacks.
Around 11:30 the bit shut off and we decided to run in about 10 miles to try out some jigging we have been hearing and reading about. Find some good marks and drop down some jigs to check it out. First drop Greg hooks up on something nice got color…….Brown, bummer shark……..hold it COBIA nice fish grab the gaff and bat stick it smack it up side the head and fish in the box. I am dropping one of those butterfly things with no luck.
A few days B4 I was reading a thread SeaBiscuit posted on the ultimate jig and went out and got me some of those expensive ones that Gottaflylee posted in that thread and even got super scientific and let me daughter pick out the color. I owe you guy a big thank you! I broke out this little cheep jig and gave the guys something to pick on me about. I think it went something like " what are you fishing for Brim?" No kidding, first drop I have a big bend in my pole and a big grin on my face. A nice fight and I see color…..RED yes nice 10-12 pounder on the deck. A few more drops and I do it all over again, that's two and I am the only one doing anything. Now who's laughing , few more drops and it something big next thing I know I am on my A$ came unbutton (get the jig up to check it out straightened out the hook). Bend it back into shape and drop it back down bounce, bounce hooked up again same thing.
Getting late and we have a box full of the best eats known to me. Get the boat and fish clean home by 7pm eat fresh sushi in bed by 9 back up at 4am to head to DC for a biz trip.
