A lot of us use diving plugs. One thing i noticed about 2 years ago while pulling one was that after it got hit, it was tracking hard to the right, then breaking the surface and fouling with the main line. Here is a simple and effective way to fix a diving plug that tracks to one side or the other.
Remember that your plug should track straight through the water. . . when it tracks to one side or the other, something is wrong. Generally what happens is the eye where the leader is attached has become bent to one side or the other. You can fix the problem by bending the eye back to its original position. You really don't have to bend the eye very far to fix the problem.
Ok, so where is the original position you ask. You can know which direction to bend the eye by how the plug is tracking. If the plug is tracking left, move the eye slightly to the right. Vise versa, if the plug is tracking right, move the eye slightly to the left. Also, when you crimp or tie your leader, particularly if you are tying your leader, make sure to leave a loop knot tied to the eye which gives the plug more flexibility in the water. Most of us are crimping to the larger diving plugs anyway, but the loop knot also applies when using light tackle and smaller plugs.
Once again, I hope this tip helped at least one member become a better fisherman.
. . . 'till next time. . .
