This tip deals with re-skirting lure heads. We have all had skirts chewed up, ripped off, bitten off, etc. This tip will deal with getting those lures looking good again.
First, you will need waxed thread, new skirts, and scissors and some form of lube. I use a silicone spray lubricant.
To start, clip the head off the skirt you want on the INSIDE. I usually just cut right above the eyes on the skirt.
Next, you will want to turn the skirt inside out.
You will then slide the skirt over the lure head from the TOP of the lure head. This is when the lubricant comes in handy. YOu will want to heavily coat the lure head and inside of the skirt to make it easier to slide over the lure head.
You slide the skirt to the bottom of the lure head and make sure that it is flush with the bottom. If it is not, you can simply trim some of the excess skirt off.
This is when you tie the inner skirt to the bottom tier of the lure head. I have used normal black thread to make is show up better in the pics, but normally i juse waxed rigging thread just as you would use to rig up a mackeral.
You wrap the skirt tight to the bottom tier and finish off with a few half hitches. I do not use glue to finish this off. I have found that glue will tend to make the skirt stick, even after it has had plenty of time to dry. I also have never had one come off when i did not use glue.
Once you have tied it off, you simply fold the skirt back down and your inner skirt is finished.
Now you repeat the process with the outer skirt, but this time you finish it off on the top tier of the lure head. Some people like to leave more of the eye on the skirt visible on the outer layer, i really have not noticed much of a difference. It is more of a personal preference.
Once you have finished tying the outer skirt, fold that one back down and you have a newly re-skirted lure ready to hit the water!!
Until next time. . . SHARK
